The film received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office disappointment, leading to plans for a third film in the series being cancelled and the character being rebooted once again for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition, Peter’s childhood friend Harry Osborn returns to New York City and becomes the Green Goblin, seeking a cure for a genetic disease that threatens his life. Meanwhile, Spider-Man must confront a new villain, Electro, who gains electric powers after an accident involving a power grid. Peter’s relationship with his girlfriend Gwen Stacy becomes strained when he learns about her father’s dying wish that he stay away from her to keep her safe. The film follows Peter Parker, a teenage boy who is also the superhero Spider-Man, as he tries to balance his personal life and his responsibilities as a crime-fighter.
